 Friday 2nd December 2016

As always, I expect the children to read for at least ten minutes, five days a week as a minimum. In addition, there are times tables to learn. There are no additional spellings to learn for those Year 5's in Mrs Laidlaw's group and the Year 6's in my group. Revision of the statutory Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 spelling lists is a must. We will be testing these in the week commencing 12th December. Please remember that your child has a log in for the spelling app on the school website where the lists can be worked through. They are also to be found in the middle of the Reading Records.

Friday 25th November 2016

Below are the spellings issued to the Year 5/6 children in Mrs Laidlaw's spelling group and in my group.

As well as the usual weekly spelling tasks, the children have been given a letter today with their log on details for a new spelling app on the school website. I have, so far, added the Year 5/6 Statutory word list for the children to practise on but I will be adding more words in the days to come. This will become, next Friday, an additional way of your child learning their weekly spelling lists too. Keep an eye on it as more words and lists are added.

As usual, we will be checking reading records on Monday morning to ensure that children are reading at home at least five times a week. In addition, we will have our weekly times tables test.

Friday 18th November

The new spellings for the week have been issued to all children. We will test these on Thursday, as always. We are coming to the end of the Year 5/6 Statutory Word List now. Before the end of term, the children will be assessed on both the Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 lists. Please encourage your child to be looking at the lists in their reading records book.

As always, the children are expected to read at home at least five times a week, for a minimum of ten minutes. You will have seen from your child's reading record that we are also independently reading in class for twenty minutes a day, as well as hearing the whole class book (currently Fireweed by Lucy Mangan).

Our weekly times tables tests continue on Thursdays and your child is encouraged to take home blank grids to practise on.

Friday 4th November

The children have all been issued with their spellings to learn for next Thursday. In addition, reading at home should continue to be a frequent event (at least five times a week), recorded in the Reading Records and signed by an adult. We continue with our weekly times tables test. To support this, I recommend an app called 'Maths Duel' which supports children in the four maths operations.

I am not able to access the remote school server this weekend so I am unable to add the spellings issued. I will ensure  this is actioned on Monday.

Friday 21st October 2016

Below are the spellings to be learned over the half term week. The children are also expected to be practising their times tables and to be read for at least ten minutes, five times a week.

Friday 14th October 2016

This week's twenty spelling words are attached below. Please ensure that your child has their Reading Record signed by an adult, as we are finding one or two 'forgeries, creeping into class. As always, Times Tables remain a focus too.

Friday 7th October 2016

If all has gone to plan, the children all have taken home their spelling books with a new list of twenty words to learn, as well as their reading records and reading books. Please ensure your son/daughter practises his/her spellings frequently through the week and not just the night before, as many of them have 'confessed' to doing. They also need to do their sentences to the best of their ability.

In addition, the children must read every evening and have their reading record signed by an adult to confirm it has been done. Times tables challenges continue to take place on Thursdays and your child should be practising at home. They are welcome to take sheets home to practise with.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Friday 30th September 2016

The spellings below have been issued today, to be tested on Thursday 6th October.

In addition to learning the words, the children need to write a sentence for each, demonstrating that they are able to use the words in context.

Homework

Weekly Expectations:

Spellings

Your child has been issued with a spellings book in which there are approximately twenty words to learn, taken from both our spelling rule work and our Year 5/6 statutory word list. The children have been asked to write a sentence for each word on the page opposite to the list. They need to bring their spelling book in on Thursdays, ready for their test.

Reading

Your child is well aware that there is an expectation to read at least five times every week and to record their reading and comments in their Reading Records. Please sign to confirm that the reading has happened.

Times Tables

There will be a weekly times tables test which the children are expected to practise for. They may take home blank challenge sheets appropriate to them.
